Loyalist PR students set volleyball records

Congrats to Kyle Donnan (pictured above) and Matt Woods, two Loyalist PR students who recently set records in men's OCAA volleyball.

According to the OCAA, "fifth-year left side Kyle Donnan (Pickering, Ont.) broke the all-time Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) career record for kills last Sunday in a 3-2 (25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12) victory over Boreal.

Donnan's eight kills now gives him 724 for his career, surpassing the old record of 719 set by Redeemer's Ryan Talsma during the 2009-10 season. Donnan entered this season in third place on the all-time list.

Earlier this season, fifth-year teammate Matt Woods (Pickering, Ont.) set the all-time OCAA record for service aces. Woods now has 157 to his credit, surpassing the old record of 133 set by Trent's Ian Rettie in 2009-10. Woods entered this season in second place on the all-time list.Both Donnan and Woods have eight more games remaining to pad their records. Loyalist is currently in fifth place in the OCAA East region with a record of 8-4. The top six teams earn a post-season berth.The OCAA men's volleyball championship will take place at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont. from Feb. 23-25."

PR students attend writing workshop

Big thanks to Greg Frankson (aka Ritallin) who joined us yesterday for a dynamic performance/workshop session on slam poetry writing.

Why slam poetry in a PR class? To loosen the brain muscles and get us thinking in new and unexpected ways, of course!

This week has been all about challenging ourselves to get back in the creative groove -- and it's definitely produced some great work (not to mention lots of laughs).

Grad Profile: Kasey Pollard (2010/11)

Today's graduate profile features Kasey Pollard (2010/11) who is now employed as the Destination Development Coordinator with Hastings County in the Planning and Economic Development Department.

Prior to enrolling in Post-Graduate Public Relations at Loyalist College, Kasey completed a Honours B.A. in Tourism and Environment at Brock University.

Loyalist PR: Why did you choose to enrol in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College?

Kasey: I chose to go to Loyalist after I took a tour of the campus. I was impressed by the size of the classes and the way the school felt like a community.

After attending larger campuses, like the University of Waterloo and Brock University, I knew I wanted to study somewhere were the instructor to student ratio was lower. However, the main deciding factor was that the only program coordinator to send an in-depth email that answered my questions, and then some, was from Kerry, which basically sealed the deal for me.

Loyalist PR: Can you describe some of your current duties as a Destination Development Coordinator with Hastings County?

Kasey: My primary duties involve coordinating the Premier-Ranked Tourism Destination Development Project and acting as a liaison between the many tourism stakeholders across the county.

Some tasks include organizing meetings, managing the website, promoting tourism initiatives and increasing online presence through social media, and assisting tasks groups with developing tourism assets (like recreational geology, the Arts Route and wellness tourism).

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

Kasey: The PR program gave me a wealth of tools that enabled me to make use of the degree I got in University. I didn’t know how to connect the dots between theory and practice after I graduated, and knew I needed some hands on skills that would bridge the gaps.

Since Loyalist PR, I can now effectively communicate the knowledge I have on sustainable tourism and community development. From print interviews to presenting ideas to different audiences and knowing how to writing for various platforms, I’m now prepared and feel confident with my work.

Loyalist PR: Any highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

Kasey: When I look back on the year, it seems every day had a highlight of its own – thanks to the colourful personality of classmates. If I had to pick two, the United Way Fundraiser and the Christmas Party at Wayne’s were definitely memorable.

Loyalist PR: Any words of advice for this year's students?

Kasey: Now that the second semester is here, it’ll soon be time for internships. Make sure to give it your all wherever you find your placement and go above and beyond with your work. Whether or not your internship turns into a full-time job, you’ll gain invaluable contacts that will someday make or break a future opportunity.

Why consider post-graduate education?

Many university graduates are finding that employers are looking for practical skills and experience in addition to a degree.

To fill this void on their résumés they are enrolling in post-graduate programs at Loyalist College, gaining hands-on experience and building professional networks as they obtain certificates in specific fields of study.

Loyalist currently offers five post-graduate programs: 3D Video Production, International Support Worker, Public Relations, Sports and Entertainment Sales and Marketing, and Sports Journalism.

These programs enable students to build upon their degree or college diploma and become job ready within a short period of time.

Alex Sancton, from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, built upon his International Development degree from Dalhousie University by completing the Loyalist Public Relations (PR) program.

"I knew that my undergrad degree alone would not get me far in the competitive field of international development; although it was a strong starting point,” said Alex Sancton, Manager, Internal Communications, Strategy and Internal Communications at World Vision Canada.

“I saw Loyalist’s PR program as an opportunity to fine tune my skills. It enabled me to apply the theory of my university degree to the hands-on, practical skills gained through college. Now I’m responsible for helping to provide compelling Canada-wide communications – between leadership and staff, as well as across divisions and regional offices – so employees are more effectively informed and engaged to accomplish World Vision Canada’s goals, objectives and mission. I couldn’t be happier about where I am in my career, the projects I get to work on, and the opportunities I’ve been given to grow.”

Grad Profile: Troy Stewart, Snap Design

Today's Grad Profile features Troy Stewart (2010/11) who is now employed as the Marketing Strategist at Snap Design in Belleville, Ontario.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Troy completed an Honors Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Ontario.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to enroll in Loyalist PR?

Troy Stewart: I chose Loyalist PR due to the great reputation it had. I researched online and found this blog, and also spoke with Kerry Ramsay through emails. The active online presence plus Kerry’s quick email responses were a large factor.

Looking at the various course outlines on the Loyalist PR site also appealed to me more than other competing PR programs. They seemed much more specific, and were fit into a one year program rather than two or three year diplomas.

Also, the smaller city size of Belleville was a large factor as I did not want to move somewhere within the GTA. Coming from London, I had already experienced a large city and I liked the small, picturesque city of Belleville

Loyalist PR: What are some of your typical duties in your role as Marketing Strategist with Snap Design?

Troy Stewart: Typical duties include meeting with clients, preparing marketing reports, handling social media/PR and overall marketing of Snap, creating proposals and attending networking events. There are a lot of different roles that I play depending on the day.

Loyalist PR: How would you say Loyalist PR helped prepare you for your current role?

Troy Stewart: Pretty much everything in Loyalist PR helped me with my current role! The overall introduction to marketing and branding really helped me to understand not just PR, but marketing in general. Now that I am doing marketing, and not just PR, it has been a huge help. As well, PR professionals will need to know marketing, even if they just focus on PR.

The focus on social media helped immensely as well, since it is such an emerging communications channel. I’ve continued to keep up my “class assignment” blog while simultaneously running Snap Design’s blog.

I find the key to social media is not just making a post and waiting for people to comment, but to actively seek out popular bloggers and Tweeters, and then create a discussion with them.

Working with clients, especially in the second semester, really helped with learning how to deal with clients and understanding their desires. With my university background I was comfortable with writing reports, and Loyalist PR helped refined those skills.

Loyalist PR: Can you share with us any highlights of your year with Loyalist PR?

Troy Stewart: The trip to Toronto and meeting George Strombolopolous was a great experience. That was a highlight for me. Got to see Steamwhistle and their great marketing team while also seeing George who has always been an icon to me since his days at Much Music.

Another highlight was the Christmas Party at Wayne’s! Held at Castle Carruthers, it was great hearing Santa rap, while having a great time with secret Santa.

Lastly, the PRISM awards were a great highlight for me as well. The team I was in won the Respect Campaign awards, which was a great accomplishment because we put a lot of effort into that report! It’s great to see what the campaign has done this year, and it is great to know that we may have improved the College for the better.

Loyalist PR: Any advice for current or future Loyalist PR students?

Troy Stewart: I would say networking as soon as possible is key to success. I really believe that if you have a passion and connect with people, you will be successful. Get out there, get people to know you and when it comes time to search for an internship or job, people won’t just see you as another resume, they’ll know you for who you are.

Loyalist PR: Any final thoughts?

Troy Stewart: It was a great year at Loyalist PR and thanks for having me write a guest blog post! I hope all students of this program the best of success in whatever path they choose.

Amanda, who is now a Client Relations Specialist with TalentEgg (based in Toronto), guided students through the agency's web site and job search features which are ideally suited for many graduating college and university students.

$29,805 for the United Way of Quinte!

Loyalist PR students were on hand today to help present a cheque for $29,805 to the United Way of Quinte.

In addition to Loyalist PR's "United Way Truckload Sale" which raised $18,611, the Loyalist College community donated an additional $11,194 thanks to pancake breakfast, employee donations, the annual Police Run and other fundraising efforts.

Roadtrip: Loyalist PR heads to Toronto

Perfect fall weather helped make yesterday's Loyalist PR trip to Toronto an unforgettable day.

After an early start (6:30 a.m. - ouch!), we headed first to Steam Whistle Brewing where Communications Director Sybil Taylor led us through a fantastic branding presentation. Students also had a chance to tour the brewery, adding to the fun of the experience.
After a great patio lunch (minus the wasps), we met up with Jeremy Cammy, Executive Producer, Events & Marketing and members of his team at Indigo headquarters on King Street West (see photo above). Following an interactive and informative presentation, we were all delighted to dive into our swag bags (books for everyone!) -- thanks, Indigo!

Our next stop was CBC Studios, home of George Strombolopolous Tonight. With special guests Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada, celebrated authoress Margaret Atwood and New York Times columnist and author Thomas Friedman in the house, students and faculty enjoyed a great taping, complete with plenty of humour thrown in by audience relations guy, Fraser.

Big thanks to George who once again took out time from his schedule to chat with us and make us feel at home on his home turf.
On what little adrenaline we had left, we powered home, spurred on by Top Gun and the likes.

Great trip, everyone - hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

United Way Campus Truckload Sale!

Back by popular demand, the 2nd annual Campus Truckload Sale in support of the United Way of Quinte will take place Wednesday, October 19th beginning at 8 a.m. in the Loyalist College cafeteria.

This bargain hunter’s dream is being hosted once again by the Post-Graduate Public Relations students of Loyalist College. Products for the fundraiser are being donated by a number of local manufacturers, and are expected to include personal hygiene items, cereals and snack products, sports equipment and much more, all at drastically reduced prices.

Since the Post-Graduate Public Relations program began in 2005, PR students have raised more than $22,000 with their fall United Way event fundraiser.

"The Campus Truckload Sale is a great way to support more than 50 United Way member agencies in our local community, while at the same time providing valuable, hands-on learning experience to our public relations students,” says Kerry Ramsay, Professor and Co-ordinator of the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College.

Participants are advised to come early for the best deals. We hope to see you there!

Grad Profile: Shannon Clark (PR 2010/11)

Today’s grad profile features Shannon Clark (Loyalist PR 2010/11) who is now employed as the Assistant Coordinator for the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC).

Prior to enrolling in Loyalist PR, Shannon completed a diploma in Social Service Work.

Loyalist PR: What are some of your current job duties at EDAC?

Shannon Clark: My duties range from event logistics (hotel accommodations, conference space, meals, facilitation) to overseeing tourism activities, communicating with partners and sponsors and coordinating vendors. And much more!

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

SC: I wanted to make a change in my life and had done a lot of soul seeking and research. I wanted to work with people on some level - I liked the vastness of Public Relations and it seemed to fit my personality.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

SC: It prepared me in more ways than I thought. The beginning of the year starts off in organizing a United Way fundraiser. I took away many tools from that experience into my position now. Also, the fact that everything you learn in the year you will have to use in some form within your employment.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

SC: There were many - George Strombolopolous, United Way fundraiser and the friendships I made along the way.

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the program this fall?

SC: Be positive and open to new situations. Take it seriously but also have fun, it will pay off in the end if you want it to.

Grad Profile: Logan Morrison (2010/11)

Today’s grad profile features Logan Morrison (Loyalist PR 2010/11) who is now employed as the Events and Logistics Manager with REC Promotions, the leading professional mixed martial arts promotion company in Ottawa, Ontario.

Prior to enrolling in Loyalist PR, Logan achieved his Advanced Diploma in Television and New Media Production at Loyalist College.

Loyalist PR: Tell us about some of the duties you perform in your current role at REC Promotions.

Logan Morrison: We host seven events a year: three pro MMA events, three amateur Muay Thai and one Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open. I am in charge of the general organization, budget, sponsorship, marketing, promoting, selling tickets, contract negotiations and event logistics and organizing.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

LM: I had a short time finishing TVNM as a Producer, and I did well, but thought I could improve on how I interacted with the "corporate" side. PR did that and more.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

LM: I have always been a people person, but PR honed my skills, made me more organized and focused on personal, and business goals as well. I learned how to make non-profit events, and how to 'ask'.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

LM: My highlights in PR were getting "back to basics", where we would say "this is ridiculous, I did this in grade school" only to realize we forgot how. Talking to people from alumni who JUST graduated, and know the in's and out's, not people who graduated 40 years ago, telling you how it was.

True Colours also taught me a lot about myself, and how to react to others. My push to get the internship I wanted, and getting it was a great highlight. My greatest highlight was organizing the PRISM Awards [end-of-the-year PR awards banquet], because it lead me to my new career.

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the program this fall?

LM: Don't stop believin'! Personally, PR was how I took my steps towards my dream job. If you want to be that someone who makes a difference to the public by adhering to its needs, then follow that dream like I did.

Grad Profile: Colleen Vickers-Kleywegt ('11)

Today's grad profile features Colleen Vickers-Kleywegt (Loyalist PR 2010/11) who is now employed full-time as the Special Events Co-ordinator for the City of Quinte West.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Colleen completed the Travel & Tourism Program at Loyalist, and worked for several years in the travel and customer service industry.

Loyalist PR: Tell us about your duties as Special Events Co-ordinator for the City of Quinte West.

Colleen Vickers-Kleywegt: Some of the things I do as part of my job are: write media releases, do media interviews, contact local businesses and organizations etc to solicit for both volunteers and donations for various festivals, events, and initiatives, grant writing, planning of events.

I also sit on several committees as the City Liaison, sometimes take minutes at meetings, meet with new potential event contacts, design posters and literature, track budgeting.

There is such a variety to the things I do. That's why I love this job, and the PR program definitely prepared me for it. All of the things I am doing are things we learned in class. It feels really good to use these new skills, and feel confident in doing so.

Loyalist PR: Can you share with us any highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

CVK: My year in the PR program was a great one. I made some great friends, I had a great time, and I learned so much. The PR program is the reason I can say that I love my job! Some of my favourite memories are the Toronto Trip... from pictures with Strombo (!) to the Steam Whistle Brewing visit, and the strange man who invaded our presentation at RBC. It was a great time. Also the United Way Fundraiser and just the time we spent in class together.

Loyalist PR: Do you have any advice for this year's Loyalist PR students?

CVK: I would say just go for it! Follow your dreams, have fun this year, learn all that you can and make as many friends as you can.

Be involved in everything, try everything and take time to appreciate the year because it goes by quickly, and then it's gone.

Grad Profile: Gloria Fletcher (PR 2010/11)

Today’s grad profile features Gloria Fletcher (Loyalist PR 2010/11) who is now employed as the Marketing Manager at Applefest Lodge in Brighton, Ontario.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Gloria worked for 14 years in the Canadian military as an aircraft technician, and almost 12 years as a production planner in the aircraft industry. As Gloria puts it, she is a “graduate of the School of Life – with honours!”

Loyalist PR: Tell us about some of your current duties as Marketing Manager at Applefest Lodge.

Gloria Fletcher: My duties are varied. Primarily it is my job to create awareness of the facility in the surrounding areas; the end goal of course is to fill the new wing. I do that in a lot of ways. I plan special events, attend events representing the facility, promote thru news releases and media releases, thru networking and of course social media when I can.

I will say that is a struggle, as a lot of the world has not kept up with the times and it is sometimes hard to convince old school that this kind of exposure will work for them. I also participate in chamber of commerce activities and visit the surrounding towns, and speak to various groups such as Lions, Legion, church groups etc.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

GF: I was in a place of transition in my life. I knew it was time to make some changes, and I needed to do it before I was too old or lost the courage to try. I came into the college the year before to get some advice on what direction to take, and felt this program would be a good fit. It was a really tough decision as I was rather intimidated by the youth and education of the other students I would be in the classroom with.

I have no regrets; it was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

GF: There is nothing that I learned that I have not used in this job. On a daily basis you use the writing skills, event management, networking, social and traditional media skills that you learn in this program. You work with people of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds in the classroom as you would on the job. The people you meet and the experiences you have while learning always relate to something you are doing now. I have made some fabulous friends and connections that I know I can call on at any time.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

GF: I have to say some of the debates and discussions with one of the young fellas who has turned out to be a close lifelong friend. I’m sure we spiced it up for the rest of the class too, lol!

I also really enjoyed the speakers who came and shared their experiences in the field. Fabulous stories and a good look at what was to come. And every one of them was ready to answer questions then and now, connections for life! I really appreciated the opportunity to work for a charity of our choice, and apply the KISS theory. More work doesn’t always raise more money!

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the program this fall?

GF: Embrace the moment. Really get to know everyone in your program, they may not be friends for life but they have something to teach you and I guarantee you will be contacting them for something down the road.

Also, use your professional associations as much as you can and get a mentor. The advice you get and suggestions they make will ensure you success in whatever path you take. Oh, and the professors aren’t half bad either!

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Luc completed a diploma as an Environmental Technician at Loyalist.

Loyalist PR: What are some of your duties in your current position?

Luc Fournier: My job title describes a significant part of what I do and to be more specific there are three major events we work on throughout the year.

One is a high-class gala, two is an annual half marathon and the third is one of the largest golf tournaments in the area.

Not only do I get to organize major events, it is my responsibility to solicit donors, cash sponsors and product sponsors. I am responsible to ensure our donor contacts are constantly updated and accurate for future use. I connect with community members and business people and offer them the opportunity to be involved with their local health care as I guide them through various fundraising opportunities of their own.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

LF: I decided that I would take PR because I felt that it was a good fit for my personality. Dealing with people and unique situations every day seemed appealing to me. Specifically I chose Loyalist because of the one year program allowing me to be educated quickly, I was not interested in two more years or three more years of school.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

LF: Loyalist PR prepared me for my current position by teaching me how to communicate well.

If there is one thing I have learned it is that in this world there are all different kinds of people. It is part of my job to ensure that those different people are communicated with in a manner that they understand to ensure the job gets done.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

LF: I would have to say the biggest highlight of the year for me was our trip to the Steam Whistle Brewery. I am a huge fan of beer so it was nice to see how they make it and I learned how I might apply my newly acquired education to something I love.

Also, working on projects like the United Way fundraiser with all of my classmates really felt good. Not only because we were doing something for a good cause but because our hard work and effort clearly paid off.

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the program this fall?

LF: Keep an open mind and pay attention during the True Colours Workshop. Don't forget to blow off some steam. The pub opens at 12 noon and closes at 4 throughout the day.

Today’s grad profile features Wayne Carruthers (2010/11) who is currently employed as the Planning & Design Coordinator for Hospice Prince Edward.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Wayne graduated from the Funeral Service Education Program at Humber College. He practiced in the social services and funeral sector for a number of years before applying to Loyalist College.

Loyalist PR: Can you tell us a bit about what your day-to-day duties are as the Planning & Design Coordinator for Hospice Prince Edward?

Wayne Carruthers: I work with a small but mighty team of staff and volunteers made up of local talent who have a passion for hospice care and life. Much of my time is spent developing and implementing a case for support that will provide future resources to expand our programs.

At present I am working to develop and launch Capital Campaign. I can honestly say that at this time last year I could not have possibly taken on the task of understanding donor relations before the Loyalist PR program. The relationships that I cultivated during that time have been invaluable to my professional development.

Two other projects include Hike for Hospice May 2012, and other signature and third party events. Daily I maintain the Hospice Prince Edward web site, social media sites, and the list goes on. All exciting and worthwhile work.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

WC: Returning to school at the impressionable age of 50 was not an easy decision for me, however; it was the most effective way to take my skills from past careers and rejuvenate old diplomas and work experience.

Loyalist PR was the perfect transition to “New World” of communications and provided an opportunity to reinvent myself .

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

WC: The skills that I obtained I use every day at Hospice Prince Edward: hosting government official, fundraising, creating new releases and press conference, graphics design, donor relations, volunteer relations and team work. It’s all relevant to my current position.

The best preparation came from my internship at the Northumberland Hills Hospital where I absorbed everything that my mentor (Rhonda Cunningham and her staff) offered and continue to offer.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

WC: Oh my… that would have to be the trip to Toronto and hunting down Peter Mansbridge,in the CBC atrium for a group photo . The opportunity of hosting the class Christmas party at my house. But the major highlight was be recognized by my peers with the PRISM Spirit Award of Merit [at the end-of-the-year program awards luncheon].

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the program this fall?

WC: My advice is frank but simple. Work with the team. If you have problems working with the team, this is the place to learn the skills.

Secondly, use your research time wisely. Loyalist PR is a post-graduate program that focuses on not only polishing your communication skills but your research skills. If you put yourself into it this program, it will develop skills that will set you apart and open doors of opportunity.

The secret of success in this program is having willingness for professional development and making time to have fun.

Today's Loyalist PR grad profile features Adrienne Barrie (2010/11) who is now employed as the Development Officer at the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation in Cobourg, Ontario.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Adrienne completed the Print Media Program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario and worked in the field for three years.

Loyalist PR: Tell us about your duties as Development Officer at the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.

Adrienne Barrie: My role is leading and directing the Annual Giving/Signature Events at the Foundation, as well as any third party events that involve the hospital. Other duties include maintaining positive relations with donors and assisting the Foundation in reaching its goal of raising a minimum of $10 million during the next five years. Currently we are working on the organization and planning of our 11 annual gala event.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

AB: When I graduated from Algonquin, I knew I was eventually going to go back to school, but wasn't sure which direction I wanted to take. I started doing research and liked the fact that PR could lead me in so many different directions.

The post-grad program at Loyalist stood out to me, because of the length of the program. I liked that I was able to spend eight months learning, and then get right out into the "real world" and get hands-on experience, rather than spend another three years in classes. After meeting with Kerry to chat about the program, I knew it was the right choice for me, and I could learn a lot from her and the other teachers.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

AB: The PR Program has helped me in so many different ways. I would not get through everyday life without everything I learned at Loyalist. It has taught me how to take on leadership roles, gave me the skills I needed to be able to get up in front of 50 people for a presentation, and how to truly be a team player. Before coming to Loyalist, I was not confident in my writing. Throughout the program (with lots of help from Aaron!), I developed the skills I needed to create clear writing pieces.

The thing I liked the most about Loyalist PR is the fact that you aren't just taught about PR, you actually get to experience it hands-on. Event planning, writing articles that get published, class and group fundraisers, community workshops and social media training -- they have all taught us something along the way that we can now carry on in our professional careers.

Loyalist PR: What were some of the highlights from your year in Loyalist PR?

AB: There are so many! Inside the classroom, I'd have to say all the guest speakers. They all came with such enthusiasm for their careers and it was inspiring to hear their presentations. Another highlight for me is the friendships I have made. You spend a lot of time with those people, and they become your little family. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, and has different beliefs, so you can always learn from the people around you.

The class trip to Toronto early in the year really helped bring us all closer together as a team. Who could forget Wayne at the CBC building and the Christmas party at Castle Carruthers with "Santa"!

Loyalist PR: Any advice for students entering the PR Program this fall?

AB: Don't be afraid. If opportunities come your way, take them. There are always people coming into class, or at events that could potentially lead you to a job or be your boss one day, so make the most out of every opportunity. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your teachers and peers. Everyone comes from different backgrounds so you're bound to learn lots from everyone.

Last Friday's convocation ceremonies saw 35 students (not all shown here) graduate from the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program here at Loyalist College.

In his address to the graduates, CBC Radio's "Quirks & Quarks" host Bob MacDonald urged students to say "yes" to life, and to follow where the path leads.

As we say good-bye to what has been an amazing year, I'll echo Bob's sentiments and add my own best wishes for a successful and prosperous journey ahead.

Today we're catching up with Loyalist PR grad Kim Stapley (09/10) who is employed as a Recruitment Officer right here at Loyalist College.

Loyalist PR: What program did you complete before coming to Loyalist PR?

Kim Stapley: Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, I graduated from the two-year Business Program at Loyalist.

Initially, I planned to continue into third year Business Administration - Human Resource Management, but after realizing my passion, I knew that the Post Graduate Public Relations certificate program would be the perfect fit for my third year at Loyalist College.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

KS: After speaking with faculty from the School of Business about my goals and aspirations, they asked why I was not in Public Relations, as it was truly my passion. After doing some research, they were correct, and I knew it was imperative that I take PR in my third year at Loyalist College in order to pave the way to my future aspirations.

Loyalist PR: Can you describe some of your work duties?

KS: My duties include promoting college programs to prospective students, parents and a range of community organizations; planning, scheduling and executing promotional events for prospective students; developing and delivering presentations to diverse audiences providing information on Loyalist College programs and services, and local community resources; tracking statistical data relating to recruitment activities; and travelling extensively to various communities in Ontario and beyond.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

KS: First, I must give props to Kerry Ramsay and Loyalist College for developing such a unique program that covers all aspects of Public Relations. Individuals like myself, go in with a general idea to what the program will offer. What these individuals do not realize is this program empowers people, as they live their dream from the first day they set foot into the classroom.

Each day was a new lesson, challenge, and adventure worth exploring.

I know I would not have landed my current position as a Recruitment Officer if I had not taken the PR program. This program has taught me how to effectively communication through presenting, writing, and vocalizing clear concise messages to any audience. The PR program has also taught me that no matter the situation, always focus on your leadership skills and to face every situation head-on; as we never know what new adventures will be presented.

Loyalist PR: Do you have any highlights of your year in Loyalist PR?

KS: That's a tough one! I think I would have to say the trip to Toronto in the fall when we went as a class to Steam Whistle Brewery and of course meeting George Stroumboulopoulos was crazy fun – just saying! However, getting back to the point ~ we boarded the bus as a class, but left the bus as a team! Priceless…

Loyalist PR: Any words of wisdom for current students or anyone considering taking the program?

KS: Yes, go in with an open mind. This program is a lot of work, but more importantly it is a LOT of fun! Slow down, listen, and be open to change! There is so much to learn, not only from the faculty, but from one another.

Each of your classmates has come from another program or career and that in itself is one of the most amazing things about the PR program. Take the time to learn from one another and hold one to the little lessons that you may miss, if you do not look at the bigger picture.

Record-breaking year for Loyalist PR's community fundraising efforts

This has been a record-breaking year for community fundraising in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program here at Loyalist. Last semester, students raised more than $15,000 for the United Way of Quinte with its first-ever Campus Truckload Sale.

This semester, students raised an additional $3,500 for such organizations as Make-a-Wish Foundation, Kids Help Phone, Plainfield Community Homes, Fixed Fur Life, Salvation Army relief efforts in Japan, Quinte Arts Council and Quinte Conservation.

In addition, student teams gathered more than 1,600 kilograms (that's 3,520 pounds!) of food for the Gleaners Food Bank. Wow - way to go, everyone! You've made an entire college campus proud this year!

Loyalist PR hosts free community media workshops for non-profit community

For the fifth consecutive year, the Post-Graduate Public Relations students of Loyalist College hosted a free community workshop series for members of the non-profit community this past week.

Several dozen participants attended the eight workshops, which covered topics ranging from online networking and virtual fundraising to creative collaboration and social media press releases.

Big thanks to alumnus Phil Jolicoeur (Loyalist PR 05/06) who stopped by the Loyalist PR classroom today to provide students with tips on internships and an update on where he's at these days.

It's always a fun time when Phil stops by, especially considering he's made comedy such a main focus of his career these past few years.

Having interned with the Calgary Comedy Festival back in 2006, Phil continues to build on his contacts in the comedy business.

Today, he acts as PR/tour manager for The Boob Tour which travels across Canada to raise funds to provide services to breast cancer survivors. Way to go, Phil!

Today's Freeze Frame interview is with aluma Marina Apperley (Loyalist PR 09/10).

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, Marina graduated from the Business Program at Loyalist. Marina currently runs her own business, PIVOT, in the Quinte region.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to take Loyalist PR?

Marina Apperley: I was actually enrolled to complete the third year of Business at Loyalist, for both Materials Management and Human Resources; however, I loved my job within the Loyalist Alumni Office and knew that to make a move in that direction required a public relations certificate.

It wasn't until the last week before school started that I made the official decision to switch to Loyalist PR. I think it took so long for me to make this decision because Business and Materials Management was my ‘safety zone’; I knew how to do it naturally and I felt my future was safe there.

Loyalist PR: Tell us about the business you have started since leaving Loyalist PR?

PIVOT is a public relations, social community management and administrative business. The passion that is in the work that I do and hope to do in the future, revolves specifically around one notion: to help others make their mark on the world.

PIVOT’s services run anywhere from copywriting to social media marketing, consulting, virtual assistance and much more. If a client needs something specific done, it is worked into the schedule. If it something that I may not be the best for, I make sure to point them to those that can help. The goal is, as said, making their success.

Loyalist PR: Can you describe some of your day-to-day duties?

MA: Every day is slightly different than the last as clients change, projects are completed and new ones begin. Currently, my days have the basic foundation of: email (and replies), scanning for new information/news regarding PIVOT’s topics of interest but also those of current clients; scanning social media for PIVOT and for clients (intervals throughout day); social media engagement (PIVOT and clients – intervals throughout day); research and article/blog writing; media list creation; research and news release writing; marketing for PIVOT; setting up next day’s social media/planning ahead; and studying new information and news that affects PIVOT and its market.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for what you’re doing now?

MA: Wow, big question with a big answer: everything. It sounds almost silly to say but I found ‘myself’ and my professional ‘future’ in Loyalist PR. The family-like atmosphere, the constant encouragement, the general environment made it easy to be comfortable, open and honest.

These are major factors in finding my professional passion as well as my personal self.

The environment allowed for all of us to discuss and debate which helped us to express ourselves and gain our own ‘voice’; all while still providing us with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Loyalist PR: Can you share with us any highlights of your year in Loyalist PR?

MA: Definitely the trip to Toronto: Steam Whistle Brewery, CBC and a live taping of The Hour. Those that were able to make the trip were able to solidify friendships and become a team of sorts. It was a long, exhausting, incredibly fun trip that played a major role in how we interacted throughout the year.

In addition, Diana Degan’s (aka Robinson) visit to our class was a highlight for me as I am sure, many others. She spoke of her PR ‘adventures’, her business and her professional lessons learned as well as provided us with mentor of sorts, an open invitation to contact her at any time. Her stories made me excited to get ‘my hands dirty’, to begin my life in the PR field. It’s interesting now, owning PIVOT, to realize that she became a role-model in that moment, for what I want in my life.

Loyalist PR: Any words of wisdom for current students or anyone considering taking the program?

MA: Be open. Let yourself put aside the social aspects of school (in mind only) and realize what it is you want for yourself. Your future is starting in this moment whether PR is in your professional future or if it is a stepping stone to the next stage.

Be conscious for you choices and protect your brand/your reputation. It is what can make or break you in anything that you do.

Loyalist PR: Anything else you’d like to add?

MA: Beginning your own business, whether it is PR related or another topic of your choosing, is not simple, nor easy. It is long days that tend to seep over into your personal time, every time. It has to be a focus; without focus it can so easily get away from you. You have to have organizational skills, time management skills and a strong foundation whether family or friends, that will help you through its processes.

But if you have these things and a passion for what you are doing and doing it on your own terms, it can be the greatest decision. I love what I do, every moment of it including the stress. I also know that without Kerry Ramsay and the Loyalist PR program, I wouldn’t have made it this far. Thanks, Kerry!

In celebration of Valentine's Day and the start of Random Acts of Kindness Week, Post-Grad PR students partnered with Community and Justice Services Worker students at Loyalist to hand out more than 1,500 free hugs over the course of three hours.

The truth is, human beings need at least 12 hugs a day to be healthy (or so the experts tell us), so we were feeling GREAT today!

Here's a little more about Martin's background:

Prior to co-founding energiPR, Martin was the president and co-founder of Palette Public Relations. He has worked in communications and PR for 25 years, and specializes in social media, consumer marketing, product launches, corporate and internal communications, b2b and entertainment. Martin leads energi’s social media practice.

He writes a blog, my(PR)palette, is one of the hosts of the Inside PR podcast and can be found on Twitter @martinwaxman.

Martin received his APR from the Canadian Public Relations Society, teaches a social media course at McMaster University and guest lectures on PR at universities and community colleges. He’s currently president of the CPRS Toronto board of directors and is a member of the PRSA Counselors Academy executive committee and the Humber School of Comedy advisory board.

Martin has published two books of fiction, been a standup comedy MC, film and TV writer and freelance journalist. He received an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in film, television and theatre from York University in Toronto.

Shhhh! Loyalist PR gives up SM for a cause!

Thanks to one of our classroom colleagues, Logan Morrison, we're embracing a new challenge here in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program.

From 9 a.m. on December 1st until 9 a.m. on December 2nd, our students are pledging to go without using any form of social media (including blogging, Twitter, Facebooking, texting, even emailing). That's 24 hours of online silence!

The purpose is three-fold: a) to see if we can do it (!) b) to encourage us all to connect with one another using face-to-face communication and c) to help raise awareness for a great cause, War Child.

This last aspect of the challenge is what makes it so exciting for us. More than 2/3 of children in the world are affected by war -- and many of them are silent victims. By holding this 24 hour "silence" on social media, we hope to bring attention to the fact that we are the voice of these children. Our theme for this project is "One Voice".

In the days leading up to our social media fast, we'll be tweeting, blogging, Facebooking, texting and emailing to encourage others to join us. Then from 9 a.m. on Dec. 1st to 9 a.m. on Dec. 2nd -- SILENCE.

Loyalist PR students enjoyed a great day of speakers and networking at yesterday's National Philanthropy Day Conference in Kingston.

Sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the conference was aimed at celebrating philanthropy and instructing fundraising professionals from across southeastern Ontario.

Loyalist PR students assisted in a variety of roles, including readying gift bags for conference participants, welcoming delegates to the conference, manning the registration tables, writing news releases and speaker bios, creating PowerPoint presentations and much, much more.

As they returned from study break today, Loyalist PR students were treated to a visit from program graduate Chris Thompson (07/08).

Now a full-time Graphics Designer for the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, Chris shared some great job hunting and internship tips with this year's Loyalist PR crew.

He also stressed the importance of time management as one of the key factors he learned while a PR student at Loyalist College, and encouraged students to make the most of their college experience as a springboard for entering the professional workforce.

His final words of advice: "Sometimes you've just got to take a leap of faith." So true!

There's been so much going on in Loyalist PR lately that there hardly seems to be time to write about it all!

Last week, students in the Post-Grad Public Relations Program at Loyalist hosted a fantastic event bringing together students, faculty and staff of the School of Media Studies.

Known as the Marketwire Media Mash-Up, the event is now in its third year -- and according to those who attended, this year's was the BEST yet!

The evening was MC'd by Mix 97's Orlena Cain (a Loyalist radio alumna), who revved up the crowd and got the party started.

Amazing student and faculty musicians set the tone and got us in the groove, while an on-site Plinko game, fabulous buffet and steady flow of door prizes kept the crowd happy well past closing time.

We're very fortunate in Loyalist PR to have some excellent guest speakers stop by our classroom to share with us their enthusiasm and expertise for the PR industry.

Recently, we enjoyed a presentation by Alison Bing, Communications Manager for Canada Dry Mott's Inc. (Toronto) and Stephanie Baxter, Account Director at Veritas Communications (Toronto).

Alison and Stephanie delivered an energetic presentation on brand management and promotion for the "Canada's National Cocktail" campaign, which was previously presented at the IABC World Conference in Toronto this past June.

This week, we had the opportunity to hear from three more professionals who covered topics such as writing for the media, knowing your media, and measuring your media results with MRP.

Special thanks to Victoria Procunier, Senior Account Executive (Ottawa), Jenny Cruxton, MRP Sales and Marketing Representative (Toronto) and Jane Stokes, Managing Editor (Toronto) at News Canada. United Way Campus Truckload Sale Coming!

The Post-Graduate Public Relations students at Loyalist College will host the first-ever United Way Campus Truckload Sale on Thursday, October 21st from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the college cafeteria.

Product for the fundraiser is being donated by Proctor & Gamble and will include such items as: Pantene hairspray (non-aerosol), Cover Girl cosmetics, Gillette shampoo, Always products, Oral B toothbrushes, Secret Deodorant, Kellogg Cereal and much more.

Building on the community’s highly successful United Way Annual Warehouse Sale, the Campus Truckload Sale will feature great deals for staff, students and faculty in the convenient location of the college cafeteria.

Over the past five years, Post-Graduate Public Relations students at Loyalist have raised more than $7,500 for the United Way with their fall fundraiser event. This year, they are aiming to raise $1,500 with the United Way Campus Truckload Sale.

“This event is the first-ever to take place on campus,” comments Rhonda Cunningham who teaches the Fundraising Fundamentals course for Post-Graduate Public Relations students.

“We’re excited to see how the campus community responds to this great opportunity to save money while supporting an excellent cause.”

Our next stop was RBC where the impressive PR/Corporate Sponsorship team guided us through the PR rewards and challenges of being one of two major corporate sponsors for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch Run. Thanks to the two Jackies and Chathan!

Freeze Frame with Jeannie Maidens (LoyalistPR 08/09)

Today's Freeze Frame features Jeannie Maidens (Loyalist PR 08/09) who is now working as the Events Co-ordinator for the Municipality of Port Hope.

Before enrolling in Post-Graduate Public Relations at Loyalist College, Jeannie studied Tourism Marketing and Promotions.

Freeze Frame: Tell us a little bit about what you do as Events Co-ordinator for the Municipality of Port Hope.

Jeannie Maidens: My role as Events Coordinator is both exciting and challenging. I have an interesting mix of duties, from reporting directly to Municipal Council, scheduling and chairing cross-departmental meetings, handling media relations, implementing a filing system, researching government funding opportunities, writing and designing all kinds of materials, overseeing as well as developing events of varying sizes, collaborating with many volunteers groups and service clubs, managing event promotion, entertaining visitors in our Visitor’s Centre to building floats for a parade; it’s endless.

I enjoy the changing environment and the diverse groups of people that I have the privilege of working with. My days are a-typical and it suits me just fine.

FF: What made you decided to take Loyalist PR?

JM: I loved Loyalist College and when two PR students came into my Tourism class to promote the program, I was instantly hooked into another year on campus. I was intrigued by the curriculum and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to experience it.

If you can imagine my resume as a burger, before enrolling in the PR program, I had a bun, a patty and a few squirts of ketchup; not bad considering before I came to Loyalist to take the Tourism Program I had an empty plate. Now to my burger add the PR program, and all of a sudden I have two barbequed all-beef patties, double-stacked, topped with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, hot peppers, onion, pickles and mayonnaise. Things that make you go mmmmmm.

What I am trying to say is I knew the PR course would beef up my resume, making me that much more prepared and appealing to employers; it offers a whole lot of something extra.

FF: Ok, now we're HUNGRY! So, how has Loyalist PR helped you in your current position?

JM: How hasn’t it? Thanks to Loyalist PR I am a loaded weapon, with a packed arsenal of skills! Through all the hands-on real-time projects we executed, I can confidently say, “oh, I’ve done that”, and if I haven’t, I have the confidence to say, “I can handle it”.

As a student you have a crazy amount of projects on the go at once, as well as life’s twists and turns to balance. As a professional you have the same balance to maintain, only there isn’t a classroom full of support and there is no such thing as deadline extensions.

If you choose not to do something, it’s not grades on the line but a paycheck and job security. Loyalist PR provided me with the opportunity to figure out a little thing called time-management.

FF: What were the highlights of Loyalist PR for you?

JM: The people, my peers and instructors, without these folk it would not have been the same.

The PR class is a mixed bag, people from all kinds of backgrounds who are following their passions and discovering their potential.

Our classroom setting was a really creative place to be; it was so conducive to brainstorming and collaboration. When we all got geared up and inspired, the ideas that filled the room were truly priceless.

The professors were all originals too; it was great to have such fearless leaders. The year for me was a journey and my peers surrounded me with some interesting scenery. (Insert a toast to my classmates here – what a fine group of characters.)

FF: Any words of advice for students who have entered the program this fall?

JM: During my time at Loyalist I never thought I would be working in the events field, I never thought I would be doing a lot of things. I suppose my advice would be, never say never because you never know!

Keep your options open and pay attention to the skills you are learning. Hold onto your resources and keep tabs on your developing network – you may not know when all this stuff is going to come in handy – but it will. Make the best of your time, keep an open mind and don’t throw anything out (opportunities, contacts or materials).

FF: Any last thoughts?

JM: Three things come to mind. 1) Be yourself and allow yourself to shine. 2) Apply for jobs, any job you think you are interested in…I got my job because my resume was out there, I had applied for a different position then received a call for the one I hold know. Companies won’t be able to find you if you don’t make the first step. 3) Work hard and play hard – you only live once!

We're in Week#3 now, and have settled in to the "new normal": classes at 9 a.m., two sections of students, plenty of projects, laughs and challenges to occupy the mind.

Not to mention a few scintillating case studies (Tiger, Tiger, Tiger) to keep everyone on their toes. (Oh, did I forgot to mention the CHOCOLATE?!)

Special congrats to Loyalist PR student Grace Scutella who managed the public relations for last night's highly successful 48-Hour Film Festival on campus. What a great time!

Freeze Frame with Rachel Fehr (08/09)

Today’s grad profile features Rachel Fehr (Loyalist PR 08/09) who is now employed as Community Development Coordinator with the Batawa Development Corpororation.

Prior to enrolling in Loyalist PR, Rachel earned a B.A. in Business Communications.

Freeze Frame: Can you describe some of your duties as Community Development Coordinator?

Rachel Fehr: My duties can encompass anything! We have a lot of events so I am heavily involved in the planning, marketing and execution of those events. I write a lot of pieces for the paper and try to generate press coverage for different initiatives that are occurring in the area. I maintain a clipping file, and also forward those articles to Mrs. Bata so that she can be aware of the happenings in the town that bears her name. I also do a lot of the "boring stuff" like administration and accounting, but it is nice to have some easy stuff to do when events are finished.

FF: How did you learn about Loyalist PR?

RF: I was already thinking about a Post Grad PR program when I came across Loyalist PR. I knew it would set me apart from other grads so it was great to see the program I wanted was offered in the community I wanted to stay in.

FF: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

RF: My internship [at Canadian Forces Base in Trenton]! My internship was an absolutely amazing experience and was a chance to practice PR in a professional setting, with amazing mentors. It also made clear to me the aspect of PR that I really wanted to do.

Prior to Loyalist PR, my writing just wasn't where it should be. I really developed my own style of writing and practiced the fundamentals and now when my boss asks me for a press release, I can create one in a matter of minutes instead of hours.

The graphic design element of the program is an outstanding skill to have. Simply having the knowledge and experience of working with Adobe CS3 has gotten me interviews that I never would have had before. My current employer loves that they no longer have to pay a private company to prepare their documents for print.

The process we learned for event planning was also exceedingly helpful. This aspect of the program gave me a better way to plan and execute events and to identify potential problems early on. I have used these skills on many occasions during our events.

FF: Are there any highlights that stand out in your mind when it comes to your Loyalist PR experience?

RF: Highlights would have to be the Toronto trip because it was an amazing experience and we got to meet George [Stoumboulopoulos]. The chance to write for Hockey Canada is something I am still really proud of and of course, internship. Can't say enough about internship.

FF: Any words of advice for students beginning the program this fall?

RF: Go to class! You need to be there to truly understand the message being taught. It isn't enough to just read the book at home, you need to participate in everything that happens in that class because you will learn so much more if you do.

FF: Anything else to add?

RF: You really need to focus on what you want to get out of the program and you will get it. It was hard for me to say I only want a very specific kind of job but in the end, I am exactly where I want to be. There were obstacles in getting here but my experience in Loyalist PR is what made the difference. It helped me realize what I wanted to do and gave me the confidence to know it would happen.

Meeting the original FISH guys in Seattle

My past students will know that the Pike's Place Fish Market in Seattle, Washington holds a special place in my heart. (If you're a future student, no worries - all will be revealed when we meet!)

So when I got to travel to Seattle a couple weeks ago to meet the Fish Guys up close and personal, it was a dream come true!

Special thanks to the gang pictured above, as well as Richard Yokoyama, Pike's Place Fish Market manager (pictured right) for totally making my day.

This was a trip I'll never forget!

Freeze Frame with Tracey Reid (09/10)

Today’s Freeze Frame features Tracey Reid (Loyalist PR 09/10) who is now employed as a Graphic Technician in the Marketing & Communications Department of Loyalist College.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program at Loyalist College, completed the Advertising Program at Loyalist College and worked for 15 years in the field. She returned to Loyalist as a mature student in the fall of 2009.

Freeze Frame: How did you learn about the Loyalist PR program?

Tracey Reid: I learned about the program through a three week course I took through the Abbott agency in Belleville. I had never heard of public relations before and when I heard that they were offering it at Loyalist, I was excited because it was close to home.

FF: What do your duties include as a graphic technician?

TR: My duties include designing publications such as Lasting Connections, Focus Magazine, Kids Camp Brochure and many other fun marketing tools Loyalist puts out.

FF: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

TR: The PR program prepared me in so many ways. I wouldn’t have gotten this position if I hadn’t been in the PR program. This program has taught me how to write with more confidence and clarity. This program has taught me how to take on leadership roles in a project that I am responsible for.

The PR program has changed my life, I am not kidding, I think entirely different coming out of this program. I am not the same person that walked into this course.

FF: Do you have any favourite memories of your time in the Loyalist PR program?

TR: Wow, I can’t believe I have to pick one memory! I have so many. I would have to say going to Toronto with the class was one of my favorite memories – meeting George Stroumboulopoulos [of CBC’s “The Hour”]. I think we bonded as a class once we returned from that trip as well.

FF: Any words of advice for students entering the program this fall?

TR: I was a mature student and this was one of the hardest decisions that I have ever made but it was worth it. If I could give any advice at all is that it would be...not to be scared going back to school, if you are a mature student. I couldn’t believe how I was accepted as one of the students and how everyone always made me feel so welcome.

I would have to say the advice I would give everyone, is NETWORK! This is truly a powerful tool and will take you directions that you never thought possible. Be a sponge and absorb everything, it is remarkable what you will learn from it.

FF: Anything else to add?

TR: You will have memories that will last a lifetime and friends that will be by your side when your knees are shaking behind the podium! Be positive and have fun. Enjoy this year.

Freeze Frame with Mandi Buma (09/10)

Today's Freeze Frame features Mandi Buma, a Loyalist PR student who graduates next month.

Prior to coming to the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program, Mandi was enrolled in the Recreation and Leisure Program, followed by the Accounting Program at Loyalist College.

Mandi is now working full-time as the Recreation Co-ordinator for the Township of Tyendinaga in Shannonville.

Freeze Frame: Tell us about some of your duties in your role as Recreation Co-ordinator.

Mandi Buma: I am in charge of all of the recreational programming for kids and adults, as well as all of the special events we do here. Some of these include Canada Day, Remembrance Day, a Volunteer BBQ as well as fundraising events to raise money for the recreational programs we run.

I also am in charge of maintaining the budget here, as well as being the liaison between the recreational users and the council of our Township.

FF: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

MB: Loyalist PR was a huge help in preparing me for my current job. The different courses helped me prepare for things that I do every day - event planning, fundraising, scheduling and writing.

FF: Can you tell us about any of the highlights of your year in Loyalist PR?

MB: One of the highlights for me in the PR program was the trip we took to Toronto. It was amazing to see the set of "The Hour" (on CBC) and be a part of the Christmas special. It was a great bonding experience for our class as well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

FF: Do you have any words of wisdom for students entering the program this fall?

MB: My words of advice would be to GET INVOLVED in anything you can! There is so much to experience in PR and so many amazing things to learn!

FF: Anything else to add?

MB: Come into the program with an open mind. There is so much to learn and so many things to experience. Get involved and learn as much as you can!

Loyalist PR Program doubles for fall 2010!

It's going to be double the fun this year for the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program!

We've received official word that we'll be expanding to two sections for the fall of 2010.

The good news is this means there is STILL SPACE in the Post-Graduate Public Relations Program.

To register, simply go to the Ontario Colleges web site ($95 fee to apply) or, if you are already a Loyalist student, see Kaley Gale in the Registrar's Office (no fee to apply).

We recommend that you apply soon if interested in the Loyalist PR program to avoid disappointment.

Reunion unites Loyalist PR grads!

On Saturday, March 27th, Loyalist PR hosted its five-year reunion with awesome results!

A million thanks to all those who turned out to celebrate at the Loyalist College Sportsdome, then joined us for dinner, music and entertainment later on.

Special recognition to Alanna McNutt, Meg Cunningham, Tracey Reid, Kerith Nicholl and Kristen Ricketts who organized the event and made sure everyone had a great time!

Loyalist PR's "Jail & Bail" Raises $3,500+

Hats off to the amazing team of Seaneen Collins, Stacey Sullivan and Meg Hoyle (left) who raised more than $3,500 in just two hours with yesterday's "Jail & Bail" fundraiser.

More than a dozen people were jailed throughout the day, including Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis, City of Quinte West Mayor John Williams, Orlena Cain of Mix 97, faculty members, business people... and even yours truly!

The group's charity of choice is the Oncology Unit of the Belleville General Hospital.

Fantastic job, everyone!

A number of current Loyalist PR students and alumni will be heading to Creative Minds on Tuesday, March 23rd (6:45 p.m. - 9 p.m.) at The Recreation Outreach Centre "2" (53 Nery Ave., Picton).

Creative Minds is a venue for Prince Edward County businesses and professionals to network and share creative rural economy stories and experiences, which can facilitate opportunities for economic success.

Among this session's presenters will be an inventor, a programmer, a publisher and a firefighter.

The evening will also recognize some trailblazers contributions to everything from record labels to marketing.

Come out for a great evening of networking and idea sharing!
