Grad Profile: Miya Hemmersbach (2016/17)

Today's Loyalist PR graduate profile features Miya Hemmersbach (2016/17), now the Education and Outreach Assistant at Quinte Waste Solutions.

Prior to enrolling in the Post-Grad Public Relations and Event Management program at Loyalist College, Miya completed a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies at Brock University.

Loyalist PR: What made you decide to enroll in Loyalist PR?

Miya Hemmersbach: My time at Brock University made me realize how much I love working with people and especially the community as a whole. I have always been someone with a passion for the environment and helping others. I wanted to expand my skills so I could effectively be a part of improving the quality of communities and individuals. After a lot of research on other post-grad programs I realized I could find the skills I was looking for at Loyalist PR.

Loyalist PR: Tell us about your new role as Education and Outreach Assistant.

Miya: In my role, I manage all of Quinte Waste Solutions social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I am a company representative at special events where I interact with the public and answer any questions or concerns that they may have about blue box services. I also take part in presentations to camps and clubs to improve awareness regarding recycling and composting. The largest part of my new role so far as been to develop and implement the company's first-ever Respect the Collect Campaign.

Loyalist PR: How did Loyalist PR help prepare you for your current position?

Miya: Loyalist PR helped me develop the toolbox of skills I use every day. In fact I kept a binder of notes throughout the year that sit in my desk at work. At Loyalist I was able to learn skills and software that helped me be a more efficient communications professional.

Loyalist PR: What was the highlight of your year in Loyalist PR?

Miya: The highlight of my year at Loyalist PR was organizing a fundraiser for the Quinte Humane Society. There was something really special about working with classmates and friends that shared a passion for the Humane Society and what they do for the community.

Loyalist PR: Any words of advice for the new Loyalist PR students arriving this September?

Miya: Take it all in. It is a great year where you meet so many amazing people and learn a long list of valuable skills, but it goes by way too fast.

Loyalist PR: Thanks for your time, Miya -- and good luck at Quinte Waste Solutions!
